Simple extractions for better oral health
No one wants to lose a tooth. But there are times when a simple extraction is the best option, both for treating an existing problem and for preventing that problem from getting worse. As a top Texas family dentist, Smile Workshop Family Dentistry and Orthodontics offers simple extractions for patients of all ages, using customized treatment plans based on each patient’s unique needs.
What is a simple extraction?
Why are teeth pulled?
- There’s a lot of decay in the tooth.
- The tooth is badly infected, or you want to prevent infection from spreading.
- The tooth has been damaged by trauma.
- You need to correct an overcrowding problem.
- The tooth is causing a problem with your bite mechanics.
Before recommending an extraction, a our family dentist will perform a comprehensive examination of your tooth, including X-rays, to make sure pulling the tooth is the best treatment option for you.
What happens during a simple extraction?
After the tooth is numbed, your dentist uses special tools designed specifically for extractions to loosen the tooth and lift it from the socket. These tools help ensure the entire tooth can be removed without breaking it. While you won’t feel pain, you will feel some pressure as the tooth is removed. Following the extraction, we might close the opening with a few sutures that dissolve on their own, or we might give you a piece of gauze to bite down on to stop the bleeding.
Will I have pain after the tooth is pulled?
Once the anesthetic wears off, you might have some discomfort, but you’ll be able to manage it with over-the-counter pain relievers. In the early stages of healing, you should also avoid very hot or spicy foods and foods that are hard or crunchy to avoid irritating the area. Before you leave Smile Workshop, we’ll give you instructions on how to care for the area, so it heals quickly.
