[:en]Orthodontics is a highly specialized branch of dentistry that deals with the straightening and alignment of teeth. Usually through the use of braces, orthodontists are the dental specialists who fix their patient’s crooked, crowded or generally out of place teeth. In honor of October being National Orthodontics Month, Smile Workshop Ft. Worth will discuss what an orthodontist does and who might need to see one:
An Orthodontics Overview
An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has gone back to school for an additional three years, after the completion of dental school, for specialized training in the field of teeth alignment. Basically, they determine which of their patient’s teeth are out of place, recommend a course of action to fix this misalignment and perform the procedure. Sometimes only a retainer is needed for correcting crooked teeth, but more often than not, braces are necessary to fix alignment issues. In the past, children and teenagers have been the main groups benefiting from braces, but today, there are more than 1.2 million adults in the U.S. alone who wear braces for a number of different reasons. In other instances, the patient may even require special headgear or facemasks to correct improper jaw alignment. Your orthodontist will decide what is the best course of action to fix any teeth alignment issues.
Who Should See An Orthodontist
Sometimes it’s obvious when you need an orthodontic consultation. If your teeth are unevenly spaced, pushed forward or crooked, it is likely that you will need an orthodontist to correct these problems. Another obvious example is when your top and bottom jaw do not overlap properly when you bite down. An overbite occurs when the top jaw protrudes past your bottom. The exact opposite of this would be an underbite. Speech and chewing issues could be the direct result of misaligned teeth and are easily fixed with orthodontic corrections. If you’re experiencing jaw pain, teeth grinding or crowded teeth it is important to consult with an orthodontist about correcting these issues before they get worse. It is never recommended that you try to fix misaligned teeth on your own as there are several permanent and harmful effects of DIY braces. As your local dentist, Smile Workshop will provide free orthodontic consultations so you are aware of any alignment issues you might be facing.
