Smile Workshop’s free Dental Screening program can dramatically improve the dental health of students. A comprehensive dental treatment plan can be crafted using dental screenings.
Why should students care about their teeth? Dental health is a critical part of their overall health. Oral diseases develop slowly, and if left untreated, become more complex over time. This can affect children’s s ability to eat, how they look and the way they communicate.
The Basic Screening Survey of Texas Public School Children (conducted in 2006), found that 44% of children ages 6-8 in Texas had untreated tooth decay–almost twice the national average of 26%. Tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease. Tooth decay is five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever. The study also found that children with poor dental health do poorly in school and have lower attendance than children without dental problems.
Free dental screenings are painless, preventative, visual screenings to detect signs of dental problems for students who have obtained parental consent. Patients are given a bilingual diagnosis summary to take home to their parents. Smile Workshop provides follow-up services with students and their parents to review diagnoses and provide counsel on oral hygiene. Our dental services always come with financing options, all in a private and dignified manner.
